Product Development Scientists – Food & Beverage

Our client, a manufacturer of innovative consumer goods, have asked Bryan Forrest of Lock Search Group to assist them in their search for two Product Development Scientists (one beverage focused; one food focused) to be based in British Columbia. The successful candidates will be responsible for the research and development of novel food and beverage products taking them from concept through to commercialization.


  • Manage several concurrent R&D projects for new foods and / or beverages while collaborating within a multi-disciplinary cross-functional team
  • Ensure the company’s standards of quality are met by leading quality/product and productivity improvement initiatives
  • Leverage vendor expertise with ingredient functionality when sourcing for new ingredients
  • Generate and test food or flavor prototypes and document results for physical, chemical, and sensory attributes and stability as well as the processes involved
  • Provide expertise with food or flavor raw materials as well as the flavor delivery systems. Modify formulations to deliver specific profiles
  • Translate product attributes to manufacturing specifications in accordance to costs and plant capabilities
  • Troubleshoot quality issues with product variations by investigating various factors
  • Calibrate and maintain laboratory equipment as needed
  • Maintain knowledge of consumer and technology trends related to flavour and colour; update product lines accordingly
  • Label and store product samples according to GMP and Allergen program; ensure up-to-date shelf life of ingredients and products
  • Ensure product at commercialization is the closest representation to the original concept in accordance to pricing, processes and ingredients


  • BSc. w/ 7+ years or MSc. w/ 5+ years or PhD. w/ 2+ years (Food Science or Chemistry) experience bringing new products to market in the food / beverage industry
  • Strong knowledge / experience in food safety, GMP, ISO requirements; working within Health Canada guidelines for the development and commercialization of new food / beverage products
  • Ability to work as part of a collaborative team in a fast-paced environment
  • Flexibility to manage multiple tasks and deadlines
  • Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills
